Unlock the Guitar - A great site to learn from very quickly but it's a little bit serious and boring compared to Jamorama & Guitar Superstars. Great for the serious or more mature type.

Your Guitar Playing Life Starts Here Today
Hello and thanks for visiting. This site is here to help you in moving forward towards your goal in learning to the play guitar.
No matter if your a complete beginner or an intermediate player you will hopefully find something of use on this site in your guitar playing quest. I've only been playing the guitar for around 4 years. I'm 38 when i started out my first thoughts when i began were-
"am i to old?"
"do i need to be able to read music?"
"will it be years before i can play in a band or perform live gigs?"
"i'm tone deaf, but i'm desperate to learn, am i wasting my time?"
The answer to all of the above is NO
Before we get into where to start and the best way to learn, allow me to tell you my story and what i do now.
I'm Steve from the UK near Manchester, i started to learn guitar when i was about 34. I've never had a real life tutor and i cant read music, i'm not a obsessive music fan or rock God. I do love music but i like all types from pop to classical. (like i said i'm no rock God)
I do however play the guitar to a standard that allows me to have a my own fairly successful band and i even teach guitar part time. So how did i learn? Well in a nutshell i was taught by my computer.
Sounds crazy i know but let me tell you the best things about learning with an online program-
- You can learn and progress at your own pace
- You don't spend endless amounts of money on never ending lessons
- You can pick and choose how little or often you want a lesson
- You dont walk away after a real life lesson and forget what you've been shown
- You dont have to stick to appointed time schedules like you would with a real life tutor
So the question you're thinking now is "Where do i begin?"
Well lets begin with the things you need to start-
- Your Guitar (obviously) whether you want to play an acoustic or an electric guitar the learning process is the same. If you dont have a guitar i recommend buying the cheapest version available. Dont go wasting good money on an expensive guitar, when you learn the basics and you are ready to progress then upgrade to a better guitar. My first guitar cost me £30 (around $50)
- A Plectrum. This is optional as some people don't bother with one. I use one myself but i know plenty of guitarist who don't bother with it. A thing to remember. Every guitarist has their own unique style. An example of this would be Jimi Hendrix vs Eric Clapton, both great players but totally different in style of playing.
A Tuner - Again this is optional, i use one myself but the singer in my band tunes up by ear. For the beginner i would recommend buying a tuner as there is nothing more off putting when you're starting out and your guitar is out of tune. You just end up frustraded because it sounds wrong.
A way of learning - There are a few great programs and websites out there. They range from helping the total beginner to intermediate and the advanced. Another thing to remember, even the best guitarist you have ever seen has room for improvement. When you get to the stage of being able to play to a decent standard, you will always progress. I learn something new every week.
The right mindset - You're not going to become a guitar hero over night. You will need a little patience and determination. Ask yourself why you want to play the guitar. Is it to join a band? You can sing and want to be able to write your own material? or maybe just something as simple as you've been playing guitar hero and fancy giving it a go. Whatever the reason, a little work at the start and you will go a long way. Rember the first steps in learning are the hardest, once you've cracked that you're more than on your way.
Ok, so thats it on what you need to start. Browse through the pages on this site. I've included some of my own videos with some demos and tips, hopefully you will find them useful.
When you've decided that you want to start you will need to find a program that works for you.
Click on the "review" page. On there you will find a selection of sites that you can join. Pick the best one for you. Remember, if you are serious about learning get started today. When you've learnt a few things you'll be hungry for more knowledge, not to mention being able to do something that a lot of other people can't. Dont be put off by paying for a program, a real life tutor will end up costing you a hundred times more, start with the page...
Good Luck!
